What is a zugzwang?

Zugzwang wins by giving the opponent the move when every legal reply worsens their position. It is the signature weapon of pawn and minor-piece endgames.

How to spot it

In simplified positions, ask what the opponent would play if forced to move. When every answer loses, engineer that exact position — often with a quiet waiting move.

What this set trains

These puzzles build endgame patience: winning with tempo and geometry instead of direct attack.
