What is a smothered mate?

A lone knight mates a king completely boxed in by its own pieces. The classic finish sacrifices the queen on g8 or g1 to force the final self-blockade.

How to spot it

A cornered king, a knight reaching f7 or f2 with check, and a queen able to force the rook onto the escape square — the pattern almost plays itself.

What this set trains

The most beautiful forced sequence in chess, and a masterclass in double check and knight geometry.
