What is a sacrifice?

A sacrifice gives up material for a concrete return: mate, decisive material regain or an unstoppable attack. In puzzle form the compensation is always forced and verifiable.

How to spot it

Sacrifices work where the enemy king is exposed, defenders are overloaded or your pieces dominate the key lines. Count the attackers versus defenders around the target before committing.

What this set trains

These puzzles calibrate your material judgment — learning when a rook is worth less than an open file to the king.
