What is a double check?

A double check delivers check from two pieces at once — the moving piece and the unmasked piece behind it. Blocking or capturing cannot answer both, so the king must move, which makes double checks the engine of many forced mates.

How to spot it

Double checks grow out of discovered-check batteries where the moving piece also gives check. If the king has few flight squares, look for a mating net one move later.
