What is a back-rank mate?

The back-rank mate strikes a king trapped behind its own unmoved pawns. A rook or queen lands on the last rank, and the shelter becomes a cage.

How to spot it

Count the defenders of the enemy back rank versus your heavy pieces on the file. Deflections and exchanges that reduce the defender count by one are usually decisive.
