Chess Scoresheet Generator
Set the length, columns and header you want and print a scoresheet that fits the page — one game or two per page, up to ten pages at once.
What is a chess scoresheet?
The chess scoresheet generator creates a printable chess score sheet, the form for recording every move of a game along with the players, the event and the result. It runs in your browser. Choose A4 or US Letter, set how many moves the sheet should hold, and pick a layout. The tool works out the row height for your settings and tells you when the rows would be too small to write in.
Use it for club games, school tournaments, or practice at home. You can print the sheet directly or save it as a PDF, so one file can be printed again whenever you need a fresh copy. Because the sheet is plain print layout, the saved PDF works as a chess notation sheet PDF you can keep in a folder with your other games.

How to use the chess scoresheet generator
- Choose A4 or US Letter.
- Choose how many moves the sheet should hold (40 to 120) and whether the moves run in one, two or three columns.
- Switch on the header, the time columns or the notes area if you want them, and type a tournament name if you like.
- Choose one or two games per page, and how many pages to print.
- Check the row height message above the preview, then press "Print / save as PDF".
Save the page link before you leave. It stores all your choices, so the same sheet is one click away next time. For more copies, use the printer's copies setting. In the print dialog, set the scale to 100% rather than "fit to page", so the row heights stay as shown. The generator can prepare up to ten pages to print in one go.
The moves can be laid out in one, two or three columns. Sixty moves in two columns gives rows around 7 mm tall on A4 with the header on, which is comfortable for handwriting. Each extra you switch on takes space from the rows, so the row height is worked out from every setting together. For the most room per move, choose the smallest move count, which is 40. The sheets you make here are free to use at your club or in products you sell, such as Etsy printables or KDP notation books.
What is a chess score sheet?
A chess score sheet is the form on which a player writes down every move of a game, usually in algebraic notation. It also records the players' names, the event and the result, so the game can be checked or replayed later.
A usable sheet has rows large enough for handwriting, because a cramped sheet leads to missed or illegible moves.
How to fill in a chess score sheet
Start with the header: the event, site, date, round, board and both player names. Then write each move as it is played, starting with White's first move and working down the rows. When the game ends, write the result (1-0, 0-1 or ½-½) and have each player sign if the sheet has signature lines.
How do you write moves on a scoresheet?
Each row holds one move number, White's move and Black's move, for example "1. e4 e5". Algebraic notation names each square with a letter for its file (a to h, from White's left) and a number for its rank (1 to 8).
Pieces use a capital letter: K for king, Q for queen, R for rook, B for bishop and N for knight. Pawns have no letter, so "e4" means a pawn moves to e4. A capture adds x, as in "Bxf7". A check is marked with +, a checkmate with #, and castling is written O-O (short) or O-O-O (long). A row such as "3. Bb5 a6" means White's bishop moves to b5 and Black replies a6.
Do I have to keep score in a tournament?
In standard games under FIDE rules, players must record their moves. The exception is a player with less than five minutes left on the clock in a game without an increment of at least 30 seconds, who no longer has to keep score.
Check the rules of your own event, since local tournaments may set their own requirements.
Which paper sizes work?
The generator offers A4 and US Letter, each with a 10 mm margin. Either works, so choose the one your printer uses. The row height depends on the paper, header and columns you select, so changing the paper can change the row height shown in the preview. Check the message after you choose your paper and before you print.

Questions and answers
What if the row height warning appears?
The generator warns you when rows would fall below about 5 mm, which is too small for practical handwriting. Use three columns or fewer moves, or print one game per page, then check the message again.
What does the time-used column record?
Switch on "Add time-used columns" and each side gets its own narrow column next to its move. Use it to note the time each player has used, one column for each side, so the times sit beside the moves they belong to.
How many moves can the sheet hold?
The sheet holds between 40 and 120 moves. Choose the number in the settings, and the generator works out the row height for it, so a shorter sheet gives each move more room.
Can I put two games on one page?
Yes. Choose one or two games per page in the settings, then choose how many pages to print.
Does the sheet have a header and signature lines?
Yes, if you switch them on. The header can hold the event, site, date, round, board, player names and result, and there is a signature line for each player.
Does the generator upload my sheet anywhere?
No. The sheet is built in your browser, and the only place your choices are saved is the link in the address bar.
Can I use these chess scoresheets for commercial use, such as selling a notation pad on Etsy or Amazon?
Yes. The sheets you generate are royalty-free for personal, club and commercial use, including Etsy printables, Amazon KDP notebooks and print-on-demand pads. No credit is required, and the only thing you may not do is copy this generator itself to run a competing service.
