What this accelerated dragon page does
This free opening explorer lists the named lines of the Accelerated Dragon, a Sicilian Defence system, and plays any selected line on a board. It runs in your web browser, needs no sign-up, and uploads nothing.
The catalogue behind it holds about 3,800 named opening lines. The page filters that list down to the Accelerated Dragon, so you can see every named version of the line, including the Maróczy Bind branches that White can reach after 5. c4. Each move on the board is checked by the chess rules before it appears, so the lines you see are legal.
The explorer shows named lines and positions only. It does not give engine evaluations, win percentages, master games or statistics. Use it to learn the move order, compare variations and then practise them in the opening trainer.

How to use the Accelerated Dragon explorer
- The page opens on the main line with all its moves already played. To start again, press ⏮ to return to the first position.
- Press ▶ to play the next move and ◀ to go back one move. Press ⏭ to jump to the last move of the line.
- Press Auto-play to advance one move about every 1.1 seconds. The button changes to Pause, so press it again to stop.
- Press Flip board to view the position from the other side, which helps when you are playing Black.
- Read the line under the buttons. It shows the moves played so far and, when the catalogue knows the position, its name and ECO code.
- In the Lines list, each row shows the ECO code, the name and the moves. Click a row to play that line on the board.
- In Moves of the selected line, click any move to jump straight to that position.
- Click "Practise this line in the opening trainer" below that list to open the trainer on the same line.
The address bar keeps the line you chose (the ?l= part of the address), so you can bookmark a line or send the link to a friend, and it will open on the same line.
What is the Accelerated Dragon?
The Accelerated Dragon is a Sicilian Defence in which Black plays ...g6 without first playing ...d6. After 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 g6, Black intends to place the bishop on g7 on the long diagonal. The catalogue names this family B32, and the line is also called the Sicilian Accelerated Dragon.
What is the Maroczy Bind?
The Maroczy Bind is the pawn structure White gets with 5. c4. Pawns on c4 and e4 clamp the d5 square, which limits Black's counterplay. The catalogue lists it as "Accelerated Dragon, Maróczy Bind" in B36 to B39, with three named continuations: the Gurgenidze Variation, the Simagin Variation and the Breyer Variation.
What is the difference between the Dragon and the Accelerated Dragon?
In the Dragon Variation, Black plays ...d6 early and ...g6 later. In the Accelerated Dragon, ...g6 comes first and ...d6 is delayed or skipped. In the Accelerated Dragon, White can aim for the Maroczy Bind with c4.
How do I practise the Accelerated Dragon?
Start by playing the main line in the explorer, using ▶ to step through each move and noting why each piece moves. Then choose a named variation from the Lines list and repeat it until you can play the first several moves from memory. Finally, open the line in the opening trainer, which starts on the same position, and play it against the moves the trainer shows. Do this for both colours: as Black, you play the Dragon structure, and as White, you test the Maroczy Bind.
